Typical of the size found on new developments, the client wanted low maintenance with decking and a separate sitting area.
The photos show before and after.
A stylish garden located in the city.
The brief required large sitting area, raised beds, modern water feature, lighting, children\'s play area and grass.
The existing garden needed to be totally re-designed and removed.
Now this garden is an oasis in an urban landscape.
Winners of the public vote in the NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition 2009, and Awarded an RHS Bronze Flora medal at the Gardeners' World Live Show 2009.
The theme of this competition is Growing Gardens Today to include vegetables, fruit, herbs, modernity and sustainability.
This garden is a practical space and one in which to relax and enjoy the flowers, nature and the fruit and vegetables.
Plants have been selected to attract insects - for example bees to the lavender, which will in turn pollinate the plants.
The 1985 garden is relatively high maintenance, with clipped edges to the central lawn, slab stepping stones leading to a small paved area in front of the tool shed; a patio next to the house; a pond with paved edging; a brick built barbeque on the patio, and flower borders edging the grass.
The planting consists mainly of bedding and herbaceous perennials with little winter interest.
The 2010 garden has ethically sourced sandstone paving, a patio next to house, leading on between two ponds to a sitting area, with a raised planting bed to one side and behind, and a flower bed with scented planting to the other side; a shed with a living roof; a small vegetable plot, and a slate chipping path leading to the shed.
