Gardens come in many different forms so deciding what to do with your garden can be a bit daunting.
Many factors will effect what design you have.
Your favourite plants and flowers, the location, soil type, exposure to the elements, maintenance, size and budget will all have an influence.
But where to start?
Chris Barnes has designed dozens of gardens in a variety of settings and the best starting point is a consultancy on location to access and advise you as to what is possible.
However below are some garden types which may help you in the decision making.

Consider the initial consultation to be a fact-finding mission.
Chris will visit you and your garden to find out as much as she can about your requirements and wishes.
This initial consultation is really a stepping stone to further work.
Are there any particular features or plants within the existing garden you would like to keep?.
You may know the answer to all or none of these questions, but don't worry, this is the starting point to designing the garden.
Also look at the Garden Design section here which lists a number of different garden types.

On the Isle of Wight we have many holiday homes where a garden needs to be tough and take care of itself for long periods of time, but also look gorgeous during the peak holiday seasons.
This is where a garden management plan can really help.
Older folks may need to reduce heavy work and maintenance but often love birds and welcoming wildlife into their gardens.

Set within the orchard and meadow at Afton Park, the original garden was designed and built by Chris from 2001 to 2006 and attracted the attention of major magazines like Country Living and Gardens Illustrated.
The gardens occupied an open area which was originally a flat and windswept field.
Chris created a series of garden 'rooms' by using hedging, fences and plants as boundaries.
But she also embraced the location by using plants that enjoy sunlight, were tolerant to drought and provided movement in the wind.

We moved home last year and inherited a very difficult heavy clay garden which we just couldn't get to grips with.
Thankfully Chris, a real plantswoman, came up with a very imaginative plan which gave us a garden with whole year interest which is also easy maintenance.
We are not quite so nimble as we once were!
We have had so many visitor comments on just how great it's looking.
Joe worked so hard implementing the design, removing very overgrown shrubs from the front garden and vast quanties of lawn from the rear garden to create new borders.
