I've always loved great design and I've always had a passion for plants, so I don't know why it took me so long to become a garden designer. Happily, I've now been designing gardens successfully since 2002. I graduated from the prestigious Garden Design School with a distinction. Some clients give me free rein in the garden: others have a very clear idea of what they want.
So the service I offer is very flexible. You can cherry pick the bits you want and decide how involved you'd like to be in the process. And, at every stage, you can be confident that I'll keep you up to date on design detail, budget and timescales. If I need to call in specialists in any field I make sure they're fully qualified, reliable and take pride in a job well done.
If you are interested in design or design and build, this is fully explained on the Process page. That depends on the brief and the size and complexity of the job so it's impossible to generalise. Indeed some costs may not be obvious until after the survey is done.

Services
My brief was to create a family garden with a simple, stylish entertaining area, large enough to accommodate a large dining table and comfortable seating.
Although my client had little experience of gardening she was keen to learn and requested an informal planting style with all year interest.
She also requested a smaller, more intimate seating area where you could catch the morning sun.
The children's priority was a good-sized lawn and space for their large trampoline.
I set the new garden at an angle to make it look larger and in keeping with the size of the house.

When my client returned from work to discover the sudden devastation caused by pollarding a large willow in a neighbouring property, she knew it was time to tackle her own garden.
The garden was a double plot which had been very much underused and neglected over the years.
The main access to was through double doors and onto a raised timber deck, used occasionally for dining.
The new garden has a contemporary feel even though the materials used are largely traditional.
The design is based on overlapping circles which use the whole space and lead the eye around the garden.

The owners of this garden, art and design professionals, gave me an open brief and were willing to consider different ideas and suggestions.
They liked natural materials, scented plants and different textures; the only constraint was to retain the existing silver birch trees which they had recently planted.
I decided to set the garden out on the diagonal to make it look larger than it was and to encourage the eye around the space rather than take it straight to the boundaries.
I don't like to use too many materials in a confined area but I think the combination of rough textured split setts, warm cedar decking and smooth pink sandstone works well together to create an interesting harmonious surface.

My clients wanted to make much more use of their garden for relaxation, entertaining and recreation.
As a young sporty family, they wanted a large level lawn to play ball games and a large terrace to double up as a space for table tennis.
The steeply sloping site was regraded to form two level lawns with a low retaining wall at the bottom.
Granite steps lead to the lower lawn which can accommodate a badminton court.
The upper level is reached by one of two paths along a bank of mixed planting or through a series of ornamental rose arches.

For this family of keen swimmers, a 14 metre lap pool was number one on their wish list and to get maximum enjoyment they wanted plenty of space to relax and entertain.
As the garden is relatively small, I was concerned that such a large pool would predominate and there would be insufficient opportunity for to soften the hard-landscaping with planting.
The design was further constrained by the sloping site and access difficulties; we wanted to keep as much soil as possible but the project demanded major excavation works.
