A fairly large garden for London, the clients wanted to take advantage of the size keeping a good expanse of lawn but incorporating a pond with cascading water feature and boulders. The clients wanted to make the most of their garden to entertain in and also for their children to play in. The owners of this South London garden wanted to extend their entertaining/ outside dining space and so we laid large slate tiles leading out from the kitchen.

The clients were keen to maximize the long narrow side return which their kitchen opened out on to and is slightly overlooked. Rachel Hartley trained at the English Gardening School based at the Chelsea Physic Garden in 2002 and has been designing gardens ever since. Based in South London, Rachel focuses mainly on residential gardens creating new 'outdoor rooms' for families and professionals.

Space is always at a premium especially in London, so it's often about maximizing the space available. Whilst adhering to the client brief and taking on board their style, surrounding architecture and landscape, it is also important to consider practical considerations.
Services
Providing Garden Design Solutions for your individual requirements and lifestyle from concept to construction.
Rachel Hartley offers a range of services for all or part of your garden from smaller projects such as helping with a planting scheme to producing a completely new design.
Rachel would talk through the design process, show you her portfolio of work, take a look at your garden and then if you are happy to continue, take a design brief from you - including an idea of your budget.
It is helpful if you have made a list before the meeting of all the things you love (and loathe!) to see in your garden.
This contemporary garden in Balham now offers itself as another outside room providing a great entertaining area leading from the large kitchen doors with inbuilt seating.
Raj Green Sandstone paving leads to the shed and trampoline, leaving very generous planting beds either side.
The planting is a mix of evergreen shrubs and climbers.
Additional perennials and bulbs give all year round interest.
There are also posts which support a sail shade keeping the sun out on super hot days.
The shade is also water proof so the garden can be used for entertaining even on a damp summer evening.
Like many city gardens this South London urban garden has a limited space.
The clients wanted to be able to use their 'outdoor room' for entertaining and relaxing.
The raised beds also form the structure for the inbuilt hardwood seating.
Eyelid Lights were installed within the rendered walls highlighting the black cobbles and mobile spot lights were installed within the planting beds to create atmosphere and uplight the foliage.
The planting design provides some structure planting and ensures all year round interest with bulbs and perennials.
The clients were keen to maximize the long narrow side return garden which their kitchen opened out on to and is slightly overlooked.
We installed millboard composite decking as this has longevity.
We made a bespoke contemporary pergola with stainless steel tension wires running in between which will support climbers and give it a nice finish.
Some of the planters were bespoke made from soft wood and cedar clad and one also doubled up as a storage unit.
The other pots were carefully selected.
The planting is a mix of evergreen climbers and box balls with bulbs and perennials to give all year round interest.
The owners of this South London family garden wanted to extend their entertaining and outside dining space.
We laid large slate tiles leading out from the kitchen and incorporated some cement rendered walls to provide planting beds and inbuilt seating.
We planted some Ligustrum japonicum trees at the end of the garden to provide some screening from the neighbours and also put in a contemporary pergola to give a bit of structure and also can be used for the childrens's swings.
We also added monkey bars to an already existing play structure and painted it all one colour so it all blended in.
